Open Studio at Workspace Ltd

It's time for Mission Spring Open Studio. I am taking part in the event at the Workspace Limited building where my studio is now, along with 300 other artists in the area.

Due to quite a bit of of reshuffling this past year I won't be showing a lot of new finished work, but will exhibit some of the same work as in the Fall Open Studio last year, oils and lots of work on paper. Saying that, I have worked on some new oil sketch portraits on panel that I am quite exited about and there's some work in progress also.

Yes, I moved studio again! I now work out of a nice quiet space with northern light at Workspace Limited on Folsom Street in the Mission district of San Francisco. Workspace is a beautiful old industrial building that has been converted into a large arts facility with approx 65 artists spaces.
It also has a great gallery/events space downstairs available for rent at a very reasonable price.

We are hosting Spring Open Studio on April 25 & 26. But more about this shortly.

Contemporary American Realism: 2008 Biennial at Fort Wayne Museum, Indiana

is showing from September through to November. Two of my paintings: "White Pillow" and "Invitation", were selected.

The exhibition is devoted to representing the current trends in Realist painting, sculpture, and drawing across the country. Although a seemingly narrow focus, the art in this exhibition presents a vast range of ideas, approaches, styles, and subject matter. Some artists are building and expanding upon the legacies of Photorealism, Magic Realism, trompe l’oeil, and urban realism. Others strive to capture light and texture, or delve into the psychology of the situation or sitter. Several create fantastic and macabre narrations or even border on abstraction.

Contemporary American Realism: 2008 Biennial will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue with an essay by former Director of the National Academy of Design, Dr. Annette Blaugrund and Dr. Donald Kuspit, Professor of Art and Philosophy, SUNY at Stony Brook.

The show is sponsored by Miriam and Ian Rolland Family Foundation and in part by Designer Craftsman Guild.

Unfortunately I won't be able to be present at the opening, but if you are in Indiana you are very welcome to attend.

WHEN:
Opening Reception Friday September 12, 2008, 7.30 - 9pm
Show closes on November 2.

WHERE:
Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Hours: Please check the museums website.

My new easel!

As a rare occurrence, I am blogging and bragging about something I've recently acquired, namely, the great, phenomenal Hughes Easel! It has lived up to all the expectations, it really is as great as they all say... it's a beauty and, yes, it's HUGE!

Hughes Easels patented design, a simple weight adjustment at the rear of the easel allows you to counter balance the weight of the canvas so that it can be moved easily up and down and from side to side with finger tip ease at any time, even when working on a very large piece. I haven't been asked to give an endorsement, I am just very exited about it and wanted to share this with you.

Manifest International Drawing Annual

Prior to being selected for "Selections from the International Drawing Annual 2007", I had "Trying to See" as well as another drawing "Gloomy Thoughts", picked for "Manifest International Drawing Annual 2007: Exhibition-In-Print". More info on this later.
